This chapter discusses trends in coronary heart disease (CHD) in Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) and the former Soviet Union (FSU). The chapter has three parts. First, it describes the levels and trends of mortality from CHD in CEE/FSU. Second, it reviews the possible explanations for the high rates and for the trends. Finally, it considers a few aspects of CHD in CEE/FSU that provide important findings or hypotheses relevant for the rest of the world, such as socio-economic inequalities, impact of societal transformation, and binge drinking.
