Owing to the expansion of the informal sector in Russia since the transition, discussion has arisen about the incentives underlying work in the parallel economy. The validity of certain propositions is tested by using individual data contained in the Russian Longitudinal Monitoring Survey (RLMS) in order to estimate labor supply determinants in this economy. The data confirm the hypothesis of a correlation between work in this informal sector and rationing on the regular labor market. Major differences between men and women come to light with regard to the way socioeconomic variables affect the labor supply in the informal economy: whereas the male labor supply varies with wages in this labor market, this variation is not significant for women.
