What drives people's support of governmental reduction of income equality? This paper summarizes the main findings of the recent empirical literature on the individual attitudes toward governmental redistribution. Using data from national and international surveys, various studies have shown that traditional pecuniary incentives are just one - and not always the strongest - factor that shapes individual preferences for redistribution. Altruism, jealousy, and beliefs of fairness in market outcomes constitute additional forces shaping those preferences. The current paper also provides a novel investigation of the German case, based on survey data collected in 1992 and 1999. The empirical analysis reveals that over the years governmental redistribution of income has lost substantial support. People in the eastern part of Germany are more prone to support redistribution than their westgerman counterparts; however, their attitudes seem to be converging toward those of westgerman citizens.
